Winning entry in the tender called by the Servicio Aragonés de Salud, in 2009. The project includes the urban design of the new access to the hospital.
The hospital will be erected at the foot of Santa Bárbara hill in the area of Cantagallos, on the north side of the street Val de Zafán; The site is long, narrow and steep, all of which condition the design.
The building adapts to the terrain, sitting on terraces at three levels. The lower one used for parking is open on the front (Southwest) and forms the plinth of the building; main entrances are at level 0, elevated over the new access road and generating an intense visual relationship with the historic centre of Alcañiz, on the opposite margin of river Guadalope.
The services street of the hospital is placed at the back (Northeast), at level +1, with entrances for services and supplies. Electromechanical plants are located in a separate building, connected to the hospital by an underground services gallery. Patients' wards are grouped in a dedicated block, surrounded by gardens.
We propose a hospital in open surroundings of a high environmental value, integrating a building of singular typology, with projection to both the interior and the exterior.
The proposed solution adapts to the topography, keeping balance between floor area and height, to avoid excessive distances.
